I was lucky enough to be Keisha and Malcolm’s Welldiggers Arms wedding photographer not once, but twice, last summer. Due to Covid restrictions last spring they couldn’t invite all their guests, but by September they were able to hold a full-on wedding party. So this blog combines (almost seamlessly) the photos from both days.

Keisha and Malcolm choose the pub for their reception because from the garden you can see the exact spot on the South Downs where they first met when they were out walking.

Talking of views, for couples looking for a relaxed West Sussex wedding reception venue, The Welldiggers Arms should be top of your list. It has stunning views of the South Downs, fabulous food and a covered outdoor area for dancing. Add in a lovely beer garden, 14 rooms to stay over and some of the friendliest staff I’ve ever met, and you’ve got one of the best pubs around.

If you’re looking for a documentary-style photographer for your Welldiggers Arms wedding, or anywhere else, I’d love you to get in touch.

Getting married in Petworth West Sussex

The ancient town of Petworth lies in one of the most beautiful areas of southern England and the view from the Welldiggers takes it all in. This is a proper country pub, overlooking the Downs about a mile from the National Trust’s Petworth House, famous for its Capability Brown-designed Park.

Wedding day number one started with a marriage ceremony at Horsham Register Office, then dinner and speeches at The Welldiggers. After so many months of lockdown it was joyous to see Keisha in her fabulous dress and Malcolm looking dapper in his 3-piece suit. And it was a nice touch that they wore the same clothes for the second celebration. It certainly helped with continuity!

Wedding photography at The Welldiggers Arms

As you can see from the photos, my documentary approach is to be in among the wedding guests so I’m able to capture humour, emotion and beauty from close up. I want my clients to feel what it was really like to be there on the big day, not shooting from a distance with a long lens.

The Welldiggers Arms is perfect for my relaxed and candid style of photography because it’s both informal and beautiful at the same time. It also has three very different areas for guests to congregate, so the composition and light will have a good variation.
